No, what. The fact he went on a date with another girl (all because she was a demon) doesn't sit right with him. Call him naive but he does believe it's not possible to be in love with one girl at a time. He doesn't picture himself with anyone else. His mouth opens but it hangs there while he digests that for a moment. "How did we make up?" he finally asks.
"Just don't let me forget that bananas are better than kale," he asks of her. It's a plea, really. "Can we skip the kale? Oatmeal is better if we're trying to be heart healthy." He turns to the fridge and grabs the banana and strawberries to start to cut them. He listens to her less than fun description of the time and thinks he's got an idea of when that was in the 15th century. Black Plague is the biggest clue, only because he remembers an assignment he did on it and witches once. He can't speak or imagine what it must have been like to be sixteen and considered an old maid because that's not the case anymore. "I'm sorry. Maybe I shouldn't have asked," he admits.
Next step is him needing to find a boxed cake mix so he can mix in milk, eggs and the banana and strawberries for the quick microwave edition of cake. She helps with the head tilt and is rewarded with a smile.
Maybe there was more to it, but Ruby sort of thinks that's what it boiled down to. That could be her own insecurity about Sam's ability to be happy with her for the rest of his life. Ruby doesn't think it's naive and she doesn't believe it's possible either. "You brought me fries and took me on a date."It was a little more complicated than that, but essentially...
"I'll do my best," she assures him. "We can always skip the kale." It's not her favorite smoothie addition. The twenty-first century is a much better century to live in. Running water alone...She shakes her head. "Its okay. It wasn't awful. I didn't know any better at the time."
If anything his attempt to date Ann proved he no longer get his head around anyone other than Ruby until he knew if they had something or not. That's true here too. He thinks about what she is not saying but concludes that maybe he should have thought about bringing her fries. Maybe they shouldn't be indoors. "Does this count as a date?" He didn't mean to ask that out loud but he did.
He doesn't even have to think about it before he nods his head. "Yeah, I think it'll be better without it." Oatmeal on the other hand is a great idea. He recalls he saw some packets of it beside the refrigerator and twists around to grab one. Honestly, he doesn't know how good he has it in this century. "If you say so." Still not wanting to press her, he'll take her word for it. "What do you like about now?"
He really wants to impress her so. As things start to come together, he serves her first and places them in front of her.
Ruby is aware that Ann served a purpose for Sam. Mostly Ann is an irritation to her, but not something that Ruby thinks about on a day to day basis. Ultimately, she's a little responsible for Ruby and Sam's relationship so she ought to be grateful. She's not criticizing his apology at all. She smiles bright and quick at his question before stifling the smile. "Only if you ask me out."
There is absolutely oatmeal. Most people don't know how good they have it in this century. She hums then lets out a soft, pleased sort of groan as the idea comes to her. "Long, hot, bubble baths. More books than I can ever read. No corsets. The food. Fizzy drinks. Jeans. High heels." She pauses and smiles softly at him. "You."
Oh, Sammy. She is charmed by his effort and his earnestness. When things start to come together, she starts moving into the living room, turns the TV off and lights some candles. By the time he starts serving the food, she has one of his playlists. She puts floor pillows down near the coffee table so they'll have a place to sit.
She shouldn't hide away her smile because it's one of the things that make her beautiful. "You want me to... Okay. You want to count this as a date with me?"
Oatmeal just adds to how the apartment seems to have everything. Sam likes the history lesson she is giving him but the blood rushes to his face because she paints an interesting picture with the things she lists. Bubble baths. Him. Books. High heels. Cat has his tongue so in an effort to offer her something, not just stand there (too long) he turns to the fridge to get her a fizzy drink, leaning over the counter to push it close to her.
By the time they move to the living he has more of his thoughts and voice in order and he turns to her when he finally sits, food spread out all on the table. The candlelight and music are her doing but it makes it easier to go ahead and share what he had sorted out. "I like you, too. Most, um, what I like most about here, I mean, is you. Too. More than food or modern medicine."
He's beginning to get it. His question makes that smile bloom across her face again. "I would very much like to count this as a date with you." See, it's that easy. This is an official date.
Well, it's his home as well as hers. Once they're here, they don't like leaving. It's their little hideaway. She likes making the blood rush to his face. What can she say, her list is exceptional. Her smile is back as she reaches for the soda and pops the tab on it to take a long drink. "Have I mentioned you're usually a good boyfriend."
The smile his words brings to her face this time is a little smug and very pleased. She reaches over to ruffle his hair and let her hand drift to the curve of his neck. "More than the mad scientist lab and wish magic. Watch it, Puppy. You'll give me a big head," she teases him.
She spelled it out with clear detail. As far as he sees it her smile doesn't only bloom across her face, it radiates off of her like the sun. He grins when she agrees that this is a date. She made him the happiest guy on earth again.
He will come to think of it as home if that's the case. It doesn't matter if it's the Impala or the bunker or the apartment because all the matters is family and she's very much a part of his world. His blush gets a little redder when she reminds him in clear terms that he is her boyfriend. "Don't say that. I haven't been good enough to hear that yet," he confesses.
She has a lot of good smiles but this one puts a pause in his entire system, a skip in his heartbeat. Her touch leaves behind tinkles on his skin and he bites his lip to try to hide the goofy smile working its way up on his lips. Her attention has its effects on him. He listens when she warns not to give her a big head and nods. "Okay, okay. No more compliments? So, what now... Movie?"
He's very easy to make happy if that's the case. She's not complaining though. If he's easy to make happy then it ensures he'll generally be happy with her.
"Hmmm, you like it when I keep you on your toes, " she responds. "Okay. I can crack the whip." She leans back against the cabinets, surveying him. "In that case, you really should be doing this shirtless. A good boyfriend would," she teases him.
She likes that skip in his heartbeat as well as the way he bites his lip. She considers that a moment. "Movie. Hardcore romantic or Romantic with a side of funny?"
He's not exactly batman and brooding all the time when there is a beautiful woman in his presence. The only secret ingredient here is her. He'll always be the easiest to make him happy when she's one of a kind in his life.
When did he say that? The part about liking when she keeps him on his toes. Sam is very certain that her words sound like something out of her bedside romance novels and though it makes his head spin and throat dry, he does sort of like where this is going. "A good boyfriend?"
His heart beats a little faster, easily influenced by her words and very clearly thinking about it.
"Side of funny?" he purposes. Comedy always lifts his spirits.
Ruby would be worried about him if he was. She knows Sam can get like that, but she doesn't like it when he's broody. It's too easy for him to become fixated on something.
He didn't say it, but he sort of implied it. Plus, she knows him. Well, she does read a lot of bad romance novels. She has to learn to flirt with him from somewhere. It's not a skill that comes naturally to her. "Yep," she tells him with a smug smile. She'll just give him a little bit to think about it. Ultimately though, if he doesn't want to take his shirt off, she won't push it. She's just flirting with him.
Oh, Sammy. He couldn't be any more adorable if he tried.
She nods, agreeing with him on the side of funny. "Let's go with The Proposal. We can't go wrong with Betty White." She hasn't seen it yet, and she's betting he hasn't either since it's from 2009.
Okay, true. He can be. Itinere isn't like home and Sam hasn't yet gone through the things he's known to fixate on. His head and heart are many degrees lighter at this age.
Honestly, Sam is like any other teenage boy whose brain doesn't always see how that works without words. He can't however deny that she is wrong about it. He's noticed how Ruby has been able to read him from the moment he got back. No girl has ever asked him to take off his shirt while being flirty so it's the first time. It's not an unreasonable request. He'll turn red when he takes it off but hand the shirt over to her.
Ultimately, he decides this is how to work with his hiccups and flirt back. Maybe today he'll decide to do anything she asks to make it up to her.
Like minds think alike. "You're a fan of Betty White too?" Everybody knows your Golden Girl crush, Sam. You were loud enough once for the whole motel parkade to know that you would marry someone like her.
It's that lightness in him that Ruby appreciates getting to know.
Sorry, Sam. She's still getting used to teenage boys (him). Ruby is only able to read him because she knows him so well when he's older. Ruby would be lying if she said she doesn't appreciate being Sam's first in absolutely everything she can, so she'd be pleased to know that she's the first to ask him to take his shirt off. For his compliance, he'll get a brilliant, pleased and smug smile. She hops down from the counter, takes the shirt and leans in to press a kiss to his lips. She pulls back then winks at him, turns her back to him and pulls her shirt off (she's not wearing a bra) then puts his shirt on and turns back to face him. "Carry on," she tells him, getting back on the counter to continue watching him.
It pleases her immensely that he's flirting back.
Her lips curl into a smile. "Who isn't?" Yeah, his Golden Girl crush isn't a secret to anyone. That decides it, of course. She clicks on the movie and starts it playing, spearing some of her pasta as she settles in to watch the movie next to him.
Well, she shouldn't be sorry at all. He's learning a lot more from her than any school girl whom he's kissed in the park. Her forwardness is very appealing. He can't say he really deserves the smile she sets on him, but it puts things into prospective and maybe just maybe he can let himself hope that he is on the right path to her complete forgiveness. The kiss stuns him for a second, but he eventually smiles and leans into it. Each kiss for sure is the best he's ever had. He turns completely pink like a clear glass being filled with cranberry juice all the to the brim in his face when her shirt comes off. He manages to pull himself together some point after she pulls his shirt over to cover herself. "Um... I think all that's left is to wait for the pasta?" He isn't sure where he left off actually so he looks down at the stuff he already put out.
He's trying to flirt at least. Does the shirt thing even count?
He chews on his upper lip to think for a moment. "Well, I can name one person." But that isn't the important thing. The look in his eye brightens when the movie starts playing and he turns to her with a silent but appreciative look. He copies with her the pasta and holds his fork up to clink with hers if she'd like.
She would be very disappointed in herself if he weren't learning more from her. Ruby will wonder for a long time if he's really okay with what she is. He'll be forgiven, but it won't be forgotten for a while. That's not entirely his fault. She worries about it because she believes he deserves more, because she believes that she doesn't deserve this much, something this good. However, it does more good when he smiles, when he leans into everything, into them as a couple. She likes making him blush and it's so much easier to make him blush at this age. She glances over her shoulder while her back is turned so she can see him turn that shade of pink. "Consider me in waiting then," she teases. She's not actually going to help him remember. It's fun to see him flustered. Besides, he'll figure it out soon enough.
He's doing okay. She thinks the shirt thing counts. After all, she's got him out of it. "No one with taste," she dismisses it, aware that person is probably Dean. She is a little curious what Dean and the parents think of him being here, but that's a conversation for later. She'll remind him to text Dean and tell him he's staying the night later. She doesn't want any annoyed Winchesters banging on the door. The gesture confuses her a half a second before she links her fork to is. "What are we toasting to?"
Well, Ruby is a good teacher. She shouldn't need to wonder if he is really okay with what she is because Castiel got through to him. For a while, it will be and should just be Sam that worries about her forgiving him for his outburst. He's the one that essentially shut the door in her face. He owes her no matter what better she or anybody thinks he deserves. It's also simply not true. That he deserves better. She does. He can only smile because she makes him and a part of him realizes maybe they had their first fight and are working through it. He'll get a little redder when she teases him and figure out where he was with the food soon enough.
Of course it's Dean. He doesn't really know anybody as well as his brother. Ruby dismissing it prompts a little grin, and if his heart weren't already pounding, it would be right now. "You have taste," he happily provides, moving the conversion on. He would admit he is curious how Ruby ended up a fan but he has a sneaking suspicion that the answer would look back at him in a mirror. He'll text Dean after the movie or later or something. It's not late enough yet that he's thinking about that. He's caught him off guard when she asks him what for. "Y'know, movie, food, company." It's a meager explanation but the only one to come off the top of his head.
Insecurity and worry aren't always rational. It will take a while, a conversation or two and possibly an event or two for it to go away. It's good that he's taking the issue of her forgiveness seriously though. It helps the whole situation a great deal. It allows her to take it lightly, and that's the better situation. If they both go forward with what they want rather than what's owed or deserved, it'll serve them both better. Ruby could care less what she deserves or doesn't; she knows she wants Sam regardless. They've fought before, but he doesn't remember it. Regardless they are working through this one beautifully.
"Duh," she teases in return and bumps his shoulder with hers. A lot of human things that Ruby likes circle back to him. He's the first person she's tried to be human with and for. She nods a little at his explanation. "Those are as good as any," she says in agreement.
Rationalizing everything is one thing Sam needs to learn to do less of, not more. A conversion (or two) will be good for them in the long run. He is taking it very seriously. He could learn a thing or two about want (desire) over what one deserves or needs to be responsible for and all from Ruby. He wouldn't imagine they ever fought before. How could they have when he sees himself as more mature when he's older? He'll let her be the one to judge how he's doing.
He grins because she's always very modest (as in not at all and he finds that attractive). He rolls his shoulder against hers in response to her brushing against him. Never in a million years does he think she'd harm him and this is one reason why. He feels more comfortable sitting there shirtless because her demeanor is positive. "You want to add anything?"
he absolutely needs to learn to think with his heart sometimes. Ruby will be happy to help with that. He's more mature, but he's not perfect (and neither is she).
It's one of her best virtues (not at all so it's a good thing he finds that attractive). She doesn't see any reason to be humble about something that is fact: for example, her body is hot and she's personally got great taste. It's actually a really big thing that he feels comfortable and safe around her, especially now that he knows she's a demon. She purses her lips, pondering that for a moment. "Well, shirtlessness is something I currently feel like should be toasted right now." A wicked smirk tugs at the corners of her lips (yes, she's still very pleased with herself). She leans closer to him, her shoulder pressing against his. "Also...making up."
She'll let him decide where he's comfortable going with that right now.
He can absolutely do that the moment he stops trying to earn her forgiveness. First, he just needs to be absolutely sure that he has earned it.
Well, her best virtue is hardly a sin either. Ruby does have a great body (hard not to think that when he's seen her naked a couple of times, including just a moment ago). The toplessness is still on his mind. He's pretty sure nobody would play a con that long even if they were human if they were out to hurt him. Safe may be the more accurate word of the two. He nods slowly, feeling more confident in his decision. "Sure. We can count that too." A bashful smile comes out after looking at her telltale smirk. Is he reading the signal wrong or is that a move on him? He leans closer to her and a little more until he leans in far enough to kiss her cherry red lips.
Oh, he's supposed to think of it. That was part of the reason she put on his shirt (the other is that it smells like him and somehow feels like him). It's pretty unbelievable that anyone would play a con that long. The problem Dean kept running into when he was grappling with accepting Ruby was that it would be a long con with no visible gain in the end. Itinere takes a lot of typical motivations for that sort of thing away (which is probably one reason there's not a lot of crime here). In any case, she's not running a con. At first, she'd been genuinely fascinated by Sam. Once she'd gotten to know him in their world, she'd liked him. Once she'd spent some time with him here, she'd fallen in love with him (something she'd thought impossible given her demon status and stunted emotions--which aren't nearly as stunted now as they once were).
He's definitely not reading the signal wrong and in any other situation, she'd be the one to kiss him without hesitation. However, she wants to make sure it's his choice to kiss her a demon. Once his lips touch hers, she moves even closer, arms wrapping around him, one hand tangling in his hair. When the kiss breaks, she smiles. "Definitely worth toasting."
Well, he's not going to be able to shake it for the rest of ever. His shirt and Ruby will be in his dreams when he goes to sleep tonight. He genuinely believes the best in her.
It's good that she gives him the chance to make the first move as it allows him to feel more certain, more bold in choosing it. However, it would still be an amazing kiss if she were the one to initiate it. Ruby's an expert kisser from what he can tell. Her lips melt like butter on his and her hands in his hair prompt his own to come up to the sides of her face just at her ears, melt deeper into the kiss. As the kiss breaks, his eyes open again with inquiry (did they have to stop there or could they can kiss again?). "Thank you." He is certain that was a compliment.
Just another way she influences the person he becomes. It's occurred to her (mostly prompted by Dean) that she ought to feel guilty for that, but she can't manage to actually feel any guilt over it. After all, the Sam he grows into is a very good man. If she had anything at all to do with that, she's proud of it.
Sometimes her instincts are right on. She hadn't ever kissed many people before him so he can thank himself for that. She chuckles at his acceptance of the compliment (or was he thanking her for the kiss, she's not sure) then initiates that second kiss he'd wanted, abandoning the food (they can heat it up later or take a break from the making out to refuel). She moves into the kiss, so that she's half in his lap.
Well, she should not feel guilty for letting him have all the same experiences as other teenage boys. Yes, even if that means his head is full of thoughts of her instead of school work or the family business. It's the first time he's ever found himself alone with a girl for this long. Her influence is teaching him how to be a man that can read the signals.
Ruby has good instincts or maybe she is learning some patience. Sam can't bring himself to ask her how many people she kissed before because the answer maybe more than he'd like. He's kissed very few people too. His kissing skills may still be subpar. He is most definitely thanking her for the compliment, but it goes without saying that it applies for the kiss too. One nice thing about their food is that it still tastes good at room temperature. When she moves half into his lap, he wants her the rest of the way in it and his hands seek to pull her in.
If that's how he's going to look at it, then she'll continue to make sure he's got those experiences. She'll share that logic with Dean when and if he mentions it again. It's important that he learns to read signals and to trust his instincts.
She's learning patience with him at least. Oh, Sam. He really shouldn't worry so much about that. He's the first good non-toxic relationship she's ever had. His kissing skills are improving. Practice makes perfect after all. She readily allows him to pull her into his lap. Her arms slide around him as she settles into his lap. The kiss breaks and Ruby moves one hand to rest on his heart. She can feel it pounding in his chest. "Are you still hungry?" she asks, not sure if she ought to let him eat instead of kiss attacking him.
Yes, he will look at it that way the second he returns to normal. Dean can't beat this logic, not when it's true. She's teaching him all that.
At some point everybody needs patience with Sam. He does appreciate hers above most others though. If not that, then what should he worry about? Nothing? Well, eventually he won't. When he can tell himself his kissing skills are close to hers. It's a new goal he just set. Look at Ruby be responsible for once. Sam feels an ache in his chest when the kiss breaks but half roused again when her hand rests over his hearts, eyes fluttering open to briefly look down at her hand then straight into her eyes. His heart might as well be trying to lunge into her hand. "Am I?" he phrases the question back, for a minute unable to process the real question. "Oh, I- I guess. We were going to watch the movie too, right?" Kiss attacks are alright with him, but he'll go with taking it slow again because that's what starting from the beginning should be.

Her lips curl into a smile. "Who isn't?" Yeah, his Golden Girl crush isn't a secret to anyone. That decides it, of course. She clicks on the movie and starts it playing, spearing some of her pasta as she settles in to watch the movie next to him.

Date: 2020-04-07 02:44 am (UTC)He's trying to flirt at least.

Date: 2020-04-08 01:49 am (UTC)He's doing okay.

Date: 2020-04-08 02:54 am (UTC)Of course it's Dean.

Date: 2020-04-09 12:27 am (UTC)"Duh," she teases in return and bumps his shoulder with hers. A lot of human things that Ruby likes circle back to him. He's the first person she's tried to be human with and for. She nods a little at his explanation. "Those are as good as any," she says in agreement.

Date: 2020-04-09 02:32 am (UTC)He grins because she's always very modest (as in not at all and he finds that attractive). He rolls his shoulder against hers in response to her brushing against him. Never in a million years does he think she'd harm him and this is one reason why. He feels more comfortable sitting there shirtless because her demeanor is positive. "You want to add anything?"

Date: 2020-04-09 10:53 pm (UTC)It's one of her best virtues (not at all so it's a good thing he finds that attractive).

Date: 2020-04-10 02:23 am (UTC)Well, her best virtue is hardly a sin either.

Date: 2020-04-10 05:49 pm (UTC)He's definitely not reading the signal wrong and in any other situation, she'd be the one to kiss him without hesitation. However, she wants to make sure it's his choice to kiss her
a demon. Once his lips touch hers, she moves even closer, arms wrapping around him, one hand tangling in his hair. When the kiss breaks, she smiles. "Definitely worth toasting."no subject
Date: 2020-04-11 02:45 am (UTC)It's good that she gives him the chance to make the first move as it allows him to feel more certain, more bold in choosing it.

Date: 2020-04-11 07:09 pm (UTC)Sometimes her instincts are right on.

Date: 2020-04-12 03:53 am (UTC)Ruby has good instincts or maybe she is learning some patience.

Date: 2020-04-12 11:44 pm (UTC)She's learning patience with him at least.

Date: 2020-04-13 03:38 am (UTC)At some point everybody needs patience with Sam.
Right?
