He does feel that she deserves the attention more. He ducks his head not to escape her ruffling his hair but to hide for second at how she's flustering him. The gesture is at least a little clear and he brings himself to finally smile at her again.
Lucy and him may just have to disagree there. Lots of healthy options can have taste. He's not trying to influence Lucy but Ruby will be hearing a little push from him to give her opinion on healthy options. It will be a much bigger (medium sized) push when she is human. He watches her stir the cream and licks his lips unawares. Her answer is deep and he nods. There are plenty of reasons he likes it here. But one stands out more than the rest. "It wouldn't be the same here if I hadn't met you," he tells her his reason.
Ruby can handle it and when she's human, she'll need to watch what she eats a little. After all, not everyone has the metabolism or the miracle health that Dean Winchester has. They'll have to taste the caramel once it starts to thicken and he'll be the first taste tester. His taste buds are probably better than hers anyway.
She tilts her head at him. "The same how? I mean...how do you think it'd be different if you hadn't met me?" She's curious about what he has to say at this age, with this point of view.
No one has the metabolism of Dean Winchester. They're brothers but even Sam had joined soccer in his mid-teens to lose the chubby face and keep off a dough boy figure. Ruby may still inherit something better than that. His taste buds are probably better but they should taste test it together at least. He would argue that she deserves the honor.
He puzzles a look at her wondering how she can not know. "Isn't it obvious? I... It's different because back home it's just Dean, Dad and me. There's not really anybody else to take to that stays around. You're always here. I mean I love you." He reaches to touch the ends of her hair.
That look makes her pause a little and really listening to him. Yes, she knows that it's just the three of them back home so she expects that. However, the rest of it takes her by surprise. Yes, she and Sam have expressed those feelings to each other before, but they're not words that are often said. She can't help smiling at him as she leans in to kiss him, reaching up to run her hands through his hair. "Me too, Nerd," she tells him quietly, almost bashful.
Will they share the same spoon? His eyes won't be the only thing to give away that he essentially sees it as an indirect kiss.
Well, if they don't say it regularly to each other in those words then he can't blame her for being taken by surprise. He is less aware that his older persona feels obligated not to make her feel she needs to say those three words back and shows her gestures instead. He is a little confounded with her look of surprise but he moves in to kiss her back, dropping his hand to brush the side of her neck. He smiles at her sheepishly, liking that the three words she chooses to use still sound as affectionate as I love you. Nerd is okay with him in this instance.
"What did you say?" He just wants to hear her say it again.
Pshaw. It's just wasteful to use two spoons. Yes, they'd use the same spoon.
Ruby has difficulty verbally expressing emotions and he realizes that when he's older. She doesn't hold it against him and it is nice to hear the words. She's getting better and one of these days, she'll say it to him when she's not dying. Oh, her tone is absolutely full of affection and emotion.
She knows what she's doing and her look broadcasts that but she smirks and leans back a little. She's turning those words and the idea of saying them over in her head. There's no doubt she loves him, but it seems a little like a betrayal to Her Sam if she says the actual words when she doesn't usually say them to him. "Me too, Big-Head Nerd," she teases him.
Great idea. Ruby will probably get all the credit for such a smart idea. Less washing later.
Sam would love it if she did one of these days. Sam, however, barely notices the difference in her using other words to imply the same ones he's just said. He could smile all day for this reason if she kept calling him nerd.
Maybe she should ease up then if she knows that she's making his heart jump for the moon. It wouldn't feel like a betrayal to him now, but then again in his own head there's a little competition going on within himself and this image of himself that's perfect and around the same age as her. "You're just being mean now," he laughs. He has deep blue eyes looking at her though.
Good. it's important he get the meaning behind her words rather than her words verbatim. One of these days, she'll get him to triple passcode an audio file of her saying it for him. Yes, she's aware it's paranoid to worry so much about someone using her emotions and her words against her, but it's been a part of her survival for so long that it's a very scary, very hard habit to break.
If she gets concerned that it's an issue, she will. For now, she thinks he can handle it and he deserves to know how she feels at this age and every age. "haven't you heard? I'm a big, bad wolf," she jokes. "But don't worry, I'll still think your big head is sexy," she jokes, but from her tone it's pretty clear sexy is code for I love you.
He's a fast learner and she's a good teacher. He also really wants to hear her say 'I love you, too' that anything she does say in lieu of them will always translate. He could do better than triple passcode a file for her. The only way her words and emotions would be used "against her" when it's just the two of them, here and now, is how he would emote and tell her how he feels. Understandably, that might be scary. His heart feels like it wants to shoot for the moon. He head tells him maybe he should propose to her to show her how serious he is.
His heart tends to beat faster around her, that's just a fact. Sweaty palms. Dry lips. He can handle it, yes, of course. Well, he's learning to at least. He is absolutely head over heels over the fact she can make something mean sound like a compliment in the end. "Thank you?" he isn't quite sure that's right since she's teasing him. "But I think I'd rather not be Little Red Riding Hood in this scenario, maybe somebody more like John Smith." The romanticized Disney version, of course, as the real life John Smith was a racist slaver.
She's not worried about him using her emotions against her. She doesn't think that he would ever. She spent decades guarding the shred of humanity she possesses against other demons, decades trying not to care because she knew it could be used against her. It's hard to dismiss the paranoia entirely. She'll get there eventually. Honestly, she wouldn't know what to do if he proposed now, but it wouldn't be a bad reaction or a bad thing for him to do.
She likes that his heart beats faster around her. It's all a reaction that she takes pride in causing in him. Well, they are compliments, but they're compliments because of the way she feels about him. She could say the same words to someone else and they'd be an insult. Though, she wouldn't use the same words. Nerd is a pet name reserved especially for him. She furrows her brow at him, confused at his reference. "You're going to have to tell me who that is. John Smith." They haven't watched Pocahantas.
There will never be a risk to him using her emotions against her. It just
is not in his core. The only worry she should have should be for other
demons because his anti-demon tattoo is either non-existent or in effect.
She's welcome to hold on to her paranoia for as long as she wants. Sam
won't fault her for being true to herself. In fact, how she will call him
'nerd' instead of saying 'I love you' is even more flirtatious in his eyes.
If he were to purpose to her now, he would have to get a ring first and
plan accordingly. He's seen it done this way in one too many movies.
Then all too often she must be prideful and his heart subject to beat
faster because of how beautiful her smug face is. He bows his head almost
apologetically when she asks him who John Smith is. "Well, he's a Disney
character based of a historical figure. In the movie, he falls in love with
a Native American girl despite her race and, uh, them calling her a
savage." He actually doesn't remember it all that well.
Demons, hunters, other witches, and other creatures are really the only concern she has. There's a part of her that knows her Sam ought to get his anti-possession tattoo fixed, but she also likes the trust the broken tattoo represents (and it's been fun to play with). At least there's very little expectation on her part, he's got that going for him.
Oh, Sammy. She didn't mean to do that to him. She reaches out to touch him under the chin to offset the way he bows his head. "I can see how you'd empathize with him," she tells him. "Did his friends eventually come around?"
They can worry about those creatures if and when they show up and they can talk about fixing his tattoo much, much later. Preferably when it won't need to represent his trust in her. No, but there's every expectation on his mind to make things romantic as possible.
Do what exactly to him? Make his heart beat faster? He's been doing that all this time around her. He lifts his head up with her hand under his chin, eyes between blue and green. "Um... I think they had to separate in the end because his friends were bad people," he swallows remembering to breathe. "I swear I don't want it to end that way."
And if she were aware marriage was even a possibility, she knows he would make the proposal romantic. It's a part of who he is.
No, she likes making his heart beat faster. She didn't mean to embarrass him by not knowing his reference, though it happens semi-regularly. She nods a little at his explanation. "Well, we've already decided that we're not letting that happen," she assures him. "I'm here for the long haul. Cross my heart."
Given that the rest of his family is here, it could be romantic and partially public.
Oh no, if he knew she didn't mean to do that to him, he'd tell her that he's happy to tell her a reference he makes (just as he is happy to learn about what she references when he has no idea). "I know, I know. I just want you to know I mean it," he tells her. "Cross my heart." He motions an X over his heart.
She's not sure how she feels about partially public. She knows it's a grand gesture and she appreciates all the little grand gestures Sam does for her. She'll have questions for him like 'are you sure' 'do you realize what you're giving up' and so on. That's not a talk she wants to have in front of people.
In that case, she won't shy away from asking him things any more than she shies away from asking older him questions. The corner of her mouth quirks up at his smile. "Just don't finish the last part," she warns him. "Okay. I think this caramel is ready." She takes it off the burner and dips a spoon into it then blows on the spoon to cool the caramel. "Taste?" she offers the spoon once she thinks it's cool enough to eat.
Oops. He's not the most well versed kid on the block in romance. At least
these are things he will be able to consider when he's older and come to
the conclusion that a private grand gesture is more for him. They can go
somewhere private if he does it now. All her concerns are his concerns.
Ask him anything! His eyes don't mean to glance down but he nods in
response to her simple ask to not cross that Pocahontas finish line. He
knows he would never do it again on purpose. "I don't want our story to end
that way," he admits. The smell of the caramel also signaled it was close
so nearly at the same time as her he eyes the stove. He obliges Ruby's
request by leaning in closer and tasting the caramel. His face lights up.
"It's the best I ever tasted." It's rich, it's smooth, and it's hot off the
stove.
Ruby is pretty sure that romance is different for everyone. She's not terribly well-versed either (unless you count all the trash romance novels she reads) but that's her opinion anyway.
Well she meant 'don't add the 'and hope to die' part to the 'cross my heart'. His life is already going to be extraordinarily short in comparison to hers. She doesn't want him to make it any shorter. However, she'd rather they not live out the Pocahontas ending either. His praise gets a big smile out of her and she licks the caramel off the spoon. "Mmm," she hums in agreement. "It's good. Let's get the apples on kabobs and dip them," she suggests.
At his age it's hard to think romance is different for everyone, but than
again he hopes she feels the same way about him as he feels her. Oh, Ruby
might have even shown him that she feels for him more by accepting his
apology.
Sorry, he's taking her words too literally again and should be able to take
a step back mentally in a moment. His life is short compared to her but he
would spend most of it with her at the end of the day. No one can get in
the way of that. Thump thump is the sound of his heart quickening so
loud that he can hear it drum in his ear as Ruby suggestively licks the
spoon. Bump bump. If he were holding the spoon, he'd drop it right
now. Rather he finds himself leaning in to kiss the little bit of caramel
on the corner of her mouth.
Oh, she does feel the same way. She is hopelessly, absolutely, head over heels in love with him at every age. He needn't worry about that. She hopes that he doesn't worry about it; her actions always speak louder than her words.
The wicked grin on her face might tell him that she has a good idea of what he's thinking and feeling. She lets him get the caramel off the corner of her mouth then turns into the kiss, deepening it. Her arms go around his neck and shoulders as she presses against him.
A star falling in the atmosphere would be less noticeable to him and not remotely as loud as her actions.
The grin on her face lets him know that it's okay to be doing what he is doing. The caramel is sweet or his imagination has other ideas about the trace of her lip gloss and how it tastes as the two of them deepen the kiss. He responds in kind with his arms around her waist, holding her closer.
He'll learn that it's always okay to kiss her. She's got fewer reservations about affection (public or otherwise) than he does. She breaks the kiss, but only so her lips can trail to his neck, teeth nipping lightly at the skin.
If this had happened before, he wouldn't have been too sure it was fine to continue his non subtle glances. It is, however, pretty clear that having reservations will only make him crazier because of the way she grins when she catches him. He isn't sure what she intends to do breaking the kiss, but completely thrown off by it, he tries to lean in to pick up the kiss before he remotely even clues in. Lifting his chin so his throat is accessible, he growls rather optimistically, all the while gliding his fingers down the back of her neck to signal his intention to be next.
At this rate, the caramel will be hardened again by the time they remember it is there.
Driving Sam crazy is kind of Ruby's specialty. She relishes it. Leaving hickies on Sam is also kind of Ruby's specialty, but he's learning. That growl is enough to drive her a little crazy as well. She lifts her head to press a kiss under his chin. "ooooh, Puppy," she purrs and dips her head, sweeping her hair to one side. Yeah, she got his memo.
They've got time. It's not like there's a caramel apple emergency.
His specialty is maybe that he is bolder for Ruby or maybe that's just more of her influence on him. He is honestly still learning what he's good at in their budding relationship. Breathing unsteadily, it takes a conscience effort for him not to squeeze the back of her neck with each kiss placed on his. Somehow she drives him more crazy inviting him in like that and blindly he nips before he kisses her throat in his haste.
Caramel apples? One thing for certain is that he's almost forgot about them completely.
