The girls couldn't really enjoy Halloween their first year beyond the walls of the bunker. This year with them being two years old, Ruby and Sam decided as a unit to change that. The four of them dressed up as witches and a wizard. The girls were drawing pumpkins and candies as they waited for the parents to get ready. They were really excited with the concept of "trick or treat" this year. They were also excited to go see Auntie Jodie.

Sam could get behind celebrating for their sake. He was dressed in the full robe with wand in hand sans beard. The girls cried when he first put it on as he looked different. He turned to Ruby, freshly shaven for extra measure. He paused to admire how Ruby's came together. "You look- you look absolutely bewitching."

Sam takes steady and even steps to the motel room with Ruby in his arms, careful not to jostle her. It's evident with a single glance how bad of shape she is in. The blood has all but dried, thankfully, and her wounds have started to scab over. Sam takes a small comfort in that. Though in the pit of his stomach is the uneasy feeling that this is all his fault. Ruby wouldn't have had to suffer if not for the choices he made. No, he would not go back in time to change what was between them. He had no where else to direct his anger really. Alastair had been vaporized by Anna as far as any of them knew. He would have liked to do it himself in vegence, but he could rest thinking he didn't have to. Coming face to face with the powerful demon only cemented the fact that he needed to get stronger. His goal to protect Ruby and Dean from here on out burned immensely.

The door behind him was left open so Dean could get the medical supplies he asked for. Once inside, he asks Ruby "Give me a sign you're awake, bed or shower?" He respects that she asked for a shower on the way back, knowing what it is like to want agency over one self; however, at the same time, give her the chance to opt for rest if it's more energy than she has left over. He tries to smile for her, a hint of sadness behind it.

Had they gone on a proper date since they defined their relationship? No. Yet that wasn't the sole reason behind Sam's insistence to take Ruby out for dinner. Today marked five years since he had met her that fateful day. An anniversary of sorts. Or it could be. He arranged everything from the booth at the back of the diner to that cake with the cheeky candles of 2 and 0 to make light of her never aging.

The waitress already knew not to sing Happy Birthday at Sam's behest. All he asked of Ruby was to wear whatever was comfortable. What she decided to wear still managed to steal his breath.

On the flip side, he wore a solid blue shirt free of the usual crisscross pattern to be dressed up for the occasion. His hair combed behind his ears. The faint smell of cologne rose from his shoulders. He still did not know if he used it correctly. It was something he bought (was persuaded to buy) when he picked up a bouquet of red and white flora to present Ruby before they headed out.

The evening started with him holding the door open for her. The restaurant was neither high class or dingy. Yet it was clean-- Sam had checked the reviews and the health code rating it held. A cozy little interior that had something for everyone on the menu-- the meats and veggies. Sam's hand brushed the small of Ruby's as they were seated. "There's not many people that dine here at this time, in case you were wondering." He had checked all those boxes for their comfort by checking Google. This would be a quiet evening. The two of them.

Sam had just been pulled back to their time after visting an apocalyptic version of the future. Dean and him had talked on the phone and agreed to meet back up after a few weeks apart. Honestly, he was surprised Dean called back. Sam was honest about what he learned and what he saw. Without a doubt, he knew he had to say no to Lucifer. He couldn't do that if they apart.

He looked over to Ruby once the call. He'd already filled her in on some aspects of his experience. That things with Ruby in the future weren't all hands over. He spared her the finer details. There was one thing that bugged him about what he saw. The feeling that she would never move on if something happened to him in the grind of this unspeakable war.

Standing up from the bed, he brushes the side of her hair. "Will you be able to let go of me if I should die in this war? I need you to promise me to think about yourself first."

He had called her wife in recent memory. Though tomorrow it would be true. As the time ticked closer to when they would marry, the knot in his stomach only grew. He had ever bit of a reason to feel that way. Usually, when things were going good for them, something would happen to change all that. But Sam grounded himself in a gentle reminder that Chuck was no longer in charge of team free wills' strings. They were truly free to write their own story. He wanted his to begin with Ruby.

The wedding was already set up to be a less than traditional one. There would be no church for a multitude of reasons. Sam's strongest reason that they not be in a house of a former God to celebrate Ruby and his next chapter. Neither of them would withdraw from each other the night before. That purity ship sailed ages ago. It was a ridiculous construct as well. What Sam would respect was that Ruby wanted him to first see the dress at the ceremony. It was somewhere off limits to him. The only thing he did ask Ruby about was her opinion to what color tie she liked best to match. The ceremony would be small at the rebuilt house formally belonging to Bobby. Friends like Jody and Donnie had been invited over for some pre wedding hijinks. When everyone went home for the night, Sam indicates to Ruby with the tilt of his head in the direction of the kitchen that they should have a moment alone. He puts on the kettle.

"This time tomorrow, we'll be wife and husband. How are you feeling?"

Although some of the population had yet to return after Jack defeated Chuck, Sam had a few intrusive thoughts as to why Ruby hadn't shown up yet. His number one fear had been if Chuck had thrown her into a place none of them could reach to erase her existance completely. He told Dean he needed to make a run for groceries once they drove back to the bunker. In reality, he had needed a smoke. He placed the cigerette between his lips once far enough from sight and lit it up. For the last couple of months, he had relied on the nicotine to calm his fears. Another part to it was that he dared the addiction to distract him from his negative thoughts. It did the trick most of the time. With a deep inhale in, he held it for a moment before exhaling the smoke with the winter air.

There had been a number of people that had come back with them from the Apocalypse world and Sam felt a certain bit responsible to help them settle in, but no one was more important than Ruby. He noticed she ducked out early on and followed as soon he was able.

His first guess to check in their shared bedroom was the correct one. He sat on the bed, saying nothing. A sympathetic eye and concerned quirk of eyebrow met her gaze when she looked up. He needn't say anything to get across that she had anything to say, his ears were open.

It shouldn't have bothered him as much as it did to hear someone mistake Ruby for his granddaughter for the first time the other day, but he found himself stuck thinking about it after his work day had ended. It was before Ruby returned home so he had time to waste. To impress upon himself that he wasn't yet old as dirt, he thought it was a good time as any for a make-up date where stray comments couldn't reach them by setting things up around their home. It wasn't the best wine they ever had but there was a 2025 vintage left to be open. He placed the bottle in some ice to chill while he gathered a few other things. A cd for some romantic classics from now a whole century ago or close to it, and he lit candles to set the mood.

He dressed in a button up shirt and dress pants so he wasn't dressed to the nines but certain to make enough of an impression of a second attempt at a date. All that was left to do was wait for his breathtaking wife to return home. The sound of the front door creaking open (he made a note that he would oil the hinges later) brought him to stand up from where he had sat in wait. "In here," he called out to her as if to answer her before she asked if he was home. "I missed you while you were out. Did you have fun without me?" He always wishes she does. At the very least he's happiest for her when no one has annoyed her on her solo outings.

His first red flag should have been a few days ago (48 hours eariler) when Ruby texted him to say that she was on a case in Detriot and would be gone a little while. Normally by now they would have had at least one phone call or video chat to check in on each other. The strangest thing of it all came when he decided to follow her last known location by tracking her phone and almost the second he set foot in town Ruby texted him again to meet her somewhere. In said text message, babe and other such words or mannerisms struck him as suspect as Ruby leaned heavily to calling him Puppy and generally was more teasing in her speech or writing. He tested his theory by playing along with sexting her to discover that his intuition was on to something. It couldn't be Ruby. She often would describe things in a way that almost painted a real picture of their sex life. All the prose on her end read as if someone else entered the picture.

On the flip side, if it was a trap...his only clue to finding Ruby was to agree to meet her and do his do dilegence in surveying the place beforehand. If he was wrong, which he was sure he wasn't, then he would be open to new possibilities and tease her about what calling him babe was about. He brings coffee for the two of them to the location.

It had been a difficult few days gathering their friends around the country to the bunker for safety while the British Men of Letters hunted hunters of America. Sam couldn't sleep for more than four between six hours at a time during this. Tonight began even more rougher than past nights as word of mouth (text, calls, etc) began to pour in of hunters being removed from the board as if their lives counted for nothing. Suffice to say, Sam was anxious. Ruby tells him to find a book and take his mind off things before bed as worrying and staying up won't help him be part of the solution. He's looking through some of the publications he's never cracked open before, in his usual spot within the warded library.

Tired as he is, he can tell right away when he footsteps that it's Dean. Not looking over his shoulder, he confesses, "The only thing Toni was right about is that we never read half the wealth of knowledge in here. I don't know about you, but I'm going to start." He's not trying to start another conversation about the Brits, but it won't not be on the top of his mind until it's over. His finger runs between two volumes before he picks the one on the left. It's about dreams and the spaces in between. Sam finally turns to Dean. His brother's body language suggests they do talk about something else. He moves to the table, placing his chosen book down and takes the extra class he sees Dean brought. "What's up?"

It didn't take a lot of math to deduce that the last time he had any sort of date, roadside or otherwise, with Ruby had been over eight months ago. Castiel was at fault for a lot of that, but Sam had himself to blame for letting Lucifer in too. The last fourty eight hours reality had been hard to distinguish. Ruby helped keep him present though. He wanted to do something in return for her which is why through out the day he stole repurposed things no one was using anymore from around the hospital.

When he was ready, he asked Ruby if she could get pizza from the outside world (please and thank you) and laid things out to surprise her when she got back. It wasn't much. He lit a candle that had been thrown away after a service, straghtend up flowers no longer for the purpose of a funneral and a cup of butterscotch pudding and another of orange jello that was never opened. Just because he was hospitalized for his sleep issues, it didn't mean romance had to die.

Then he waited for Ruby to bring the main course.

Jack had helped him with his crazy plan, but it required some research and other factors out of his hands. For starters, a piece of him had to still be with Ruby. He wasn't sure what it was yet it had to exist. They hadn't spoken by correspondence for a year now. Well, Ruby hadn't. His letters had gone ignored and his effort to write them had slowed even though his desperation to get in touch with her had only grown. It had been weeks since he wrote the last one when this crazy idea had first come to him and quickly blossomed into a steadfast possibility (re: opportunity).

What was crazy about it? It wasn't that he could come back one more time in reincarnation. It was only having one chance to speak to Ruby directly and mend even a small piece of the bridge he had broken in the first place. He knew it would never be the same again. It was an overwhelming move because he couldn't expect her to forgive him either.

Jack had only given him the count down from three before his consciousness found him in a hotel room. Looking at his hands, he could tell he was not corporal but neither a ghost. There was no sign of anybody in the room...

Until he focused enough to separate the noises. The rhythmic banging against the wall from next door or low hum from miniature fridge wasn't what he was looking for. The swooshing of water coming from the cracked bathroom door caught his attention. He turned to it, deducing from the room at large (one queen size bed, no luggage to be found) that nothing in particular being around gave good odds of being Ruby's temporary residence. He considered his options as he approached the door and stopped just before walking through it...

Or so he thought.

His legs carried him through the threshold, in a ghostly manner straight through the physical door. In the back of his mind, he knew the best step forward was to reveal himself rather than call to her from behind a wall. Of course it would startle her. He tensed once aware of what he did and readied himself for her response to his sudden appearance whatever it be. Politely, he kept his eyes on anything above her shoulders but he locked on how gorgeous she was after not seeing her so long. Heaven or pictures could never match up to how beautiful she was in person.

Once she saw him, he knew he had to say something. All he could muster was an apologetic face, understanding for the rage that would burst forward that he would accept in the moments to follow. Words would surely flow once he had some direction.

Team Free Will had the bunker as their base of operations these days more than dingy motels or the odd three star hotel. But tonight was different. It was almost in the wee hours of the morning when Castiel had finally broken the spell over them, and Dean hadn't been reachable to turn around in their direction to come get them. So Sam suggested the best thing they could do was take residence in the house Ruby and himself were spelled to believe they owned. They could sleep there. Rather his demon girlfriend, angel friend and himself could make use of the space as they seen fit. In the morning they would find some fuel for the van and get back on the road.

When it was just him and Ruby in the upstairs bedroom, he made no effort to hide the appreciative look on Ruby in the 1950s dress. There was only one thing that didn't sit well with him. The foreign ring on her finger. Eventually with mild discomfort, he approached her and took her hand carefully into his own. "If you don't mind, I can take this off for you." He wanted permission. The ring stood for something, potentially even a false night of marriage between them, but more than that it felt wrong for that ring to stay with them and mark his passion for her as it once belonged to the real Mrs. Cindy Smith who had not been assigned the role.

Lilith had really done a number on the two of them this time. Indirectly, that is. The number of demons that had swarmed the motel could have been the entire staff. What Sam did know right this second was that Ruby saved his back once again and using the powers she had been training him to use had drained him almost to his very core. The blood had dried down his nose but he focused on Ruby's condition.

The two of them sat in an abandoned warehouse. She had a black eye from the fight. Conveniently, the warehouse next to theirs had a coke machine outside. Sam had used an old vending machine trick to get it to dispense free drinks. "Hold still," he told Ruby while he placed the cold can to her temple.

'Don't take drugs from a guy named Don' rang into his head when he dialed Ruby's number. Except the guy wasn't a dude at all but a girl around his age that seemed interested in his life. Which never occurred to him as odd. What should have also seemed odd was that over the course of their conversation was how euphoric he felt. The girl actually suggested he should call someone to pick him up. He hadn't actually caught her name and not for the lack of asking either.

He smiled lopsidedly when the other end picked up. "Ruby, let me hear your voice. This kind lady here thinks I need someone to pick me up."

Sam planned everything. Asking Dean had only been the first step before he would propose to Ruby; the other steps he took included talking to John and Mary how they would feel if he proposed to her (a demon) as well as ring shopping. He also entrusted Dean to hide the ring while he formulated a plan. The plan came into fruition when asked Ruby if she would like to get away for the weekend on a romantic hike as far as they can go into the woods where they would spent most their time camping. Everyone else got the heads up they'd be gone. He and Ruby started out in the morning with their gear but sometime around noon, between the glances and the less than subtle touches and conversation points, he slowed to a stop when they came to the large clearing his brother described. The sun glimmered off the water; the stream itself gave life to the wild flowers and grasses that swayed in the wind before their very sight.

"What do you think? This is a good of a spot as any to set up camp." They should actually be able to enjoy some daylight and time together, right. Not expecting any complaints either, Sam slides his gear off his back to shrug it off on the ground.
